There is a need of formulating a long-term strategy for Polish agriculture based on the scenario of accession with the European Union. Both in Poland and in the EU, agricultural policy has been characterised by strong protectionism orientation, with the domination of short-term objectives undermining very often long-term strategic goals, which should be related to the sustainable development concept. Basing on the analysis of the development trends in the World's agriculture as well as on expected changes in agricultural policies in the EU, the strategy proposed for Polish agriculture was defined as Sustainable, market led, rural and agricultural growth. This strategy is based upon four generic strategies: productivity increase, sustainability, market orientation and rural development.
