In order to identify the hold-up problems in two chosen agri-food sectors - namely the fruit and pig sectors - methodological foundations of new institutional economics were used. The research focuses on the transaction costs, which level predominantly determines the performance of the sectors. Proposals of institutional changes aimed at reducing revealed hold-up problems are presented. In the case of both sectors, the process of vertical and horizontal integration would impact significantly on the reduction of mentioned problems and induce transaction costs decreasing.
