Abstract
Changes in political systems of the Baltic countries were more violent than in other countries of Eastern and Central Europe. Due to it agricultural production rapidly declined for some products even as much as 80%. In towns and the country the unknown problem of unemployment appeared, which was to a great extent a result of reduction of employment in the budgetary sphere and state agricultural sector. Thus the real income of population decreased and living conditions. In all three countries quite large social groups (7-20%) were recorded with an income below the minimum. The first period of transformation is over. The most important achievements during that period is loosening the economic ties with former Soviet Union countries, getting out of the rouble zone, advanced reprivatisation and privatization, limiting inflation from over 1000% to 25% and a general economic stability expressed by a 1.5-6% GDP increase. The economic changes are followed by changes in the social sphere, changes in the expenditure structure in farm households and food consumption. In agriculture apart from system changes the production had to adjust to the demands of new markets that substituted the considerably limited market of farmer Soviet Union countries.
