The Effects of Market Reforms in Food Economy on Food Self-Supply of Polish Households

Abstract

The purpose of our work was to evaluate changes in food self-supply in various socio-economic groups of the Polish population during the first years of economic transformation /1989-1993/ as compared to 1988. Statistical data on the consumption of 65 food items and the amount of food gat from self-supply was obtained from household budget surveys carried out by the Central Statistical Office /GUS/. The data was aggregated into 14 food groups and converted into energy and selected nutrients /protein, fat, carbohydrates, calcium, iron, vitamins: A, B1, B2, C. It has been noted that in the period under study, in all types of households, the self-supply of cheeses increased significantly, whereas of cereal products, it rose to a lower degree. In rural households the self-supply of butter, vegetables, vegetable fats went up while the self-supply of meat, anima! fats, eggs and legumes dropped. In urban households the self-supply of vegetables and butter fell but grew in the case of milk. Market reforms in food economy affected the increase in self-supply of nutrients and energy in all types of households. The highest level of self-supply was noted in 1990 /whereas in 1989 in the households of pensioners and the retired/. In 1993, as compared to 1988, the level of consumption of self-supplied carbohydrates and vitamin B1 was higher in all groups of households.
