Abstract
The paper presents the level and structure of horticultural and pomicultural production in Poland. Furthermore, the consumption of fruits and vegetables is analysed. Within the European producers of fruits and vegetables Poland is placed on sixth and third positions respectively. In the period of 1950-1999, pomicultural production expanded in volume more than 8 times, whereas the horticultural production level increased 2.5 times. Apples constitute the main item of global fruit crops and their share accounts for 80%. In the case of vegetables, the biggest shares of their total harvests were noted for cabbage (34%), carrot (17%) and anion (13%). The study shows that between 1970 and 2000 the consumption of fruits increased by 54% and vegetables by 22% correspondingly. It was observed that consumption of juices and drinks rose the fastest (i.e. six-fold).lw
