Abstract
Analyses of data gathered in late 1994 from a sample of Polish workers indicate more stability than change in the post-transformation period; more than 2 of 3 held only one job between 1984 and 1994. Older workers who left those jobs retired; for many, it was early retirement. There were more than twice as many job changes after the transformation as before it, but the changes were not from public to private employment. Workers faring the best during the transformation are those with high levels of human resources: youth, education, and health. They are the most likely to have changed from public to private employment, and to enjoy the highest incomes. They also are the most likely to be working for pay in official retirement.
