General Notes on the Scientific Conference: "Directions and Possibilities for Sustainable Development of Agro-food Sector"

Abstract

The conference Directions and Possibilities for Sustainable Development of Agro-food Sector took place at Warsaw Agricultural University on 27th October 2000. The conference was organised by the Faculty of Agricultural Economics. The discussion and presentations focused on five themes, namely: 1. Possibilities and barriers of sustainable development of agro-food sector; 2. Tendencies in agricultural production, processing, trade and consumption of farm originated products; 3. Institutions and tools affecting food economy; 4. Labour resources and their employment in agro-food sector; 5. Social and traditional aspects of the sustainable development. Constructive debate that respected the position of all involved, was based on the papers published, prior to the conference in the Scientific Fascicles of Warsaw Agricultural University, Series Economics and Organisation of Food Economy (No 40 and 41). The conference, providing a forum for exchange of the different views, resulted in better understanding the problems of sustainable development in different segments of agro-food economy and put forward useful conclusions to business practice, civil society, academia and public authorities.
